The Executive Chairman of Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, LASUBEB, Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King has advised the 2000 newly recruited primary school teachers to familiarize themselves with all necessary public service documents that would aid them in the discharge of their duties effectively to the State Government.

At an induction ceremony organised for the newly recruited teachers at LASUBEB office in Maryland today, the Chairman underscored the indispensability of the Public Service Rules, Financial Regulations and some other service documents to the new employees, saying that the materials are important to the teachers to guide their conduct, utterances and interaction as government officials.

"Get yourself acquainted with the system, get a copy of the Public Service Rules, know your rights, limitations and responsibilities. Develop yourself from time to time and be certified by the relevant professional body so that you can be globally competitive," the LASUBEB Chairman pleaded.

The induction programme which was held simultaneously at five different centres, according to Alawiye-King, was important considering the different background of the new employees who are very fresh in the system and to avoid situations where they would ignorantly run foul of some laid down procedures in service.

He said "This induction programme is customary for every new employee. It is meant to give you a smooth entry into the teaching Service at the basic education level."

He congratulated the newly employed for scaling through the very rigorous selection processes and for being able to be employed among many other qualified applicants who also applied for the job.

He said he was happy to see very passionate individuals as applicants for the teaching job, stressing that the professional level which teaching has now assumed shows that qualified individuals could now be employed as teachers as against the practice in the past when people are usually persuaded to join the teaching Service.

Alawiye-King also counselled the newly employed teachers on financial intelligence and management of their resources to meet their needs especially now that they have fixed sources of regular income.

While making a presentation to the new employees, the Director-General of Lagos State Public Service Staff Development Centre, PSSDC, Dr. Senukon Ajose-Harrison challenged the teachers to think "outside the box", broaden their horizon and be abreast of what happens in other places across the world especially as teaching is concerned.

"Hone your skills to be at par with the demands of 21st-century teaching skills and let your goals be S.M.A.R.T. which is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely, " the DG stated.

In a bid to ensure smooth and credible information gathering in Public and Private Schools, the management of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), led by Dr. Hamid Bobboyi met with Lagos SUBEB, Hon. Commissioner of Education and private education stakeholders of basic education institutions in Lagos State to sensitize them on the ongoing National Personnel Audit. Recall that the National Personnel Audit is an exercise in accordance with the UBE Act 2004, which empowers the commission (UBEC) to carry out regular personnel audit of teaching and non-teaching staff of all basic education institutions in Nigeria. The exercise is to establish a basic education data bank and also conduct research on basic education in the country. ![lasubeb_ubec2022_8.jpeg](http://157.230.58.69/uploads/lasubeb_ubec2022_8_df28a5f221.jpeg) The meeting held in LASUBEB’s Board room, had in attendance Executive Secretary UBEC, Chairman Governing Board UBEC, management staff of the Commission, SUBEB Chairman, Education Secretaries, Headteachers, representatives of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Association for Formidable Educational Development and Representatives of Muslim Schools. Hon. Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, Executive Secretary UBEC, who led the census team illuminated that the auditing is implemented by a multi-sectorial committee of the commission to determine the key performance indicators in the basic education sub-sector and also obtain reliable data for assessing the impact of basic education delivery. He added that the census will assist in identifying the gaps in the operating system, and also strategize on the approach to be used in solving the challenges facing the institution, affirming that it is not for tax or billing purposes. He mentioned that Lagos State has been undercounted due to lack of cooperation of private basic education providers, urging them to cooperate and support the enumerators in achieving an effective data gathering for national and global reportage. During the visit of the UBEC team to the State Ministry of Education, Honorable Commissioner, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo stated that the counting will help determine the numbers of schools in the state pledging the Ministry’s support in achieving a successful information gathering exercise. Vice President NAPPS, Mrs. Otegbeye and Cordinator of AFED pledged the associations support and promised to sensitize other bodies on the exercise.

To ensure continuous motivation of the workforce towards the enhancement of quality teaching and learning, the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board organized a get-together for school managers across the state on Friday, 13th May, 2022, at Olusosun Primary School, Oregun, Ikeja. At the ceremony, the Executive Chairman, Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King commended the administrators for their diligent contributions to the delivery of basic education services in the state. He noted that the essence of the gathering is to appreciate the educators for their conscientious dedication to pupils in Public Primary Schools and to charge them to remain committed. In his remarks at the gathering, he applauded Mr. Governor for the upward review of running cost to schools, adding that, the fund to be disbursed is to ensure a conducive learning environment for effective teaching and learning activities.
