To maintain a healthy school environment in state public primary schools, the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board organized a workshop themed “Role of Health Officers in the organization and administration of school health programme” for health officers across the 20 Local Government Education Authorities. Speaking at the workshop, the Executive Chairman, Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King stated that the training is to equip officers on best practices in securing a healthy learning environment, and maintaining teachers and pupils well-being. He noted that health officers are the bridge between the school and the community, since often times information reaches the community through the pupils. He furthered that “...school health is an important aspect of a healthy community and a healthy school is a state of complete physical, mental and spiritual well-being... the global pandemic is still very much around us and for us to contain it, we must continue to empower health officers in our schools", he said. Alawiye-King furthered that officers will be educated on modalities in carrying out their duties professionally in terms of medical and nutrition screening, health education, inspection of the school environment, amongst others. Mrs. Sherifat Abiodun Adedoyin, Board Member, LASUBEB added that the training will equally prepare the officers on how best to tackle cases of unforeseen health issues, when it arises at their various LGEAs. The facilitator, Dr. Adekitan Alexandra, disclosed that the workshop will enlighten the officers on identifying and resolving health hazards at their various LGEAs.
