The Lagos State Government through the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) on Tuesday, 12th August, 2025 hosted a heartwarming ceremony in honour of septuagenarians in the Basic Education community who have attained the remarkable milestone of seventy years and above.
The event, held at the LASUBEB Multipurpose Hall, Maryland, Ikeja, brought together dignitaries, retirees and well wishers to celebrate the lives, legacies, and invaluable contributions of these icons who brought development to basic education in Lagos State. The programme featured various board games, goodwill messages, presentation of gifts and accolades to the honourees. Guests were treated to a vibrant atmosphere of music, laughter, and shared memories
Speaking at the occasion, the Executive Chairman of LASUBEB, Dr. Hakeem Shittu, described the celebrants as “pillars of wisdom, whose decades of service have shaped countless lives and strengthened the foundation of our educational system.” He expressed the Board’s deep gratitude for their dedication, resilience, and sacrifices over the years, noting that their commitment continues to inspire both current and future generations of educators.
Dr. Shittu further commended the families of the celebrants for their unwavering support over the years, adding that the Board will continue to value and celebrate the contributions of those who have served meritoriously in the education sector.
Board Member of LASUBEB, Mr. Owolabi Jamiu Falana, in his words, encouraged the pensioners to live healthily and happily, noting that they had spent 12,783 days, 35 years, serving the State Government with devotion and impact.
Responding on behalf of the pensioners, Mr. Balogun Shefiu, Chairman of the Nigerian Pensioners, Lagos State Chapter, thanked the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for honouring senior citizens and urged the State Government to implement the payment of consequential arrears to pensioners along with a six month palliative to ease economic challenges.
