LASUBEB ORIENTATES SCHOOL MANAGERS ON SCHOOL-BASED MODEL

by LASUBEB Publicity unit | January 5th 2021

The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, LASUBEB, in collaboration with Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC has organized a 5-day training for Headteachers and School Support Officers of some selected Public Primary Schools on the school-based model to ensure improved pedagogy and effective school management in those beneficiary schools.

The training which commenced on January 5, 2021, holds at six centres across the state.

The training aims to improve on the former "cascade model" which used the train-the-trainer approach where only the headteachers of schools were trained and, then, expected to pass the training to other teachers.

Speaking at a related workshop recently organized by UBEC to empower teachers in the Lagos state primary education sector, the Executive Chairman of LASUBEB, Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King disclosed that the school-based model will upscale teaching and learning in public primary schools within the state.

He described the cascade model as an old era of quality control which has now been replaced with a model focused on Basic Education Quality Assurance using a pyramid style of bottom-to-top where not only headteachers but teachers and school managers are trained. This, he said, is in line with the third pillar of Mr. Governor’s THEMES Agenda.

He explained that the training will not only ensure that headteachers and support officers are in tandem with their assigned responsibilities but also encourage them to work collectively by supporting, monitoring, and evaluating teachers in the classroom.

To ensure continuous motivation of the workforce towards the enhancement of quality teaching and learning, the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board organized a get-together for school managers across the state on Friday, 13th May, 2022, at Olusosun Primary School, Oregun, Ikeja. At the ceremony, the Executive Chairman, Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King commended the administrators for their diligent contributions to the delivery of basic education services in the state. He noted that the essence of the gathering is to appreciate the educators for their conscientious dedication to pupils in Public Primary Schools and to charge them to remain committed. In his remarks at the gathering, he applauded Mr. Governor for the upward review of running cost to schools, adding that, the fund to be disbursed is to ensure a conducive learning environment for effective teaching and learning activities. He stated that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is committed to the welfare and well-being of teachers in the state, urging them not to rest on their oars but to continue to discharge their duties with a high sense of responsibility. Alawiye-King also appreciated the Commissioner of Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo for her tireless efforts in the realization of the giant strides in basic education. Comrade Hassan Akintoye, NUT Chairman Lagos State, commended the state government on the increase in the running cost, adding that the increase will boost effective service delivery in schools. Chairman AOPSHON (Association of Primary School Headteachers of Nigeria), Comrade Olukayode Edun appreciated the State government for the recognition given to the school managers. He thereafter pledged continuous selfless service to the pupils and the state in general on behalf of his colleagues.

As part of efforts to ensure smooth running of public primary schools, the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board met with Basic Education stakeholders today in anticipation and readiness for the disbursement of increased schools running cost to be released for better and effective utilisation. The upward review of running cost to schools was done at the behest of Mr. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu with the support of the Hon. Commissioner of Education. Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo to ensure the attainment of a conducive learning environment for effective teaching and learning activities. At the meeting which had in attendance Board Members, Directors, Education Secretaries, Executives of Association of Primary Schools Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON) and the Chairman of NUT, Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King- the Executive Chairman LASUBEB, stated that the gathering is premised on the desire to ensure judicious use of the increased running cost. He added that the welfare and well-being of the school is very paramount to Mr. Governor, noting that school managers should ensure effective utilization of the boosted fund released for schools maintenance. While addressing stakeholders on the collective effort made in realizing the review, he urged them to map out an action plan to ensure accountability of the funds expended on school management. Alawiye-King noted that the fund disbursed to the school is to ensure effective maintenance of the school and its environment. He noted that it is not the quantum that matters but the effective management of the limited resources. Comrade Hassan Akintoye, NUT Chairman appreciated Mr. Governor for the upward review in the running cost to schools. He stated that the increase will boost effective service delivery in schools, adding that the union will ensure that the fund is spent judiciously on its intended purpose.
