LASUBEB boosts practical learning in Schools. Donates Equipment, Materials To Vocational Training Centres

Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, LASUBEB, has donated some equipment and materials to vocational training centres in all the 20 Local Government Education Authority establishments in the State towards improving the practical learning experience of students in the beneficiary schools.

The Chairman of LASUBEB, Mr. Wahab Alawiye-King, who presented the equipment and materials to the representatives of the various schools last Friday, stated that the government will continue to make provisions for necessary tools that would further aid teaching and learning in Lagos schools.

He disclosed that the government has made it an annual responsibility to provide the necessary equipment to schools across all the Local Government Education Areas of the State so that they can function effectively and impart knowledge to the pupils.

The Chairman explained that since education has three domains of cognitive (thinking), affective (emotion/feeling), and psychomotor (physical), efforts must be intensified to balance the relationship that exists among the three without focusing on one at the detriment of the other.

While saying that presentation of the materials would specifically aid practical learning among school pupils which is the psychomotor aspect of education, Alawiye-King enjoined the teachers to support pupils in their quest for practical education by giving them access to the centres for learning purposes.

In his words, "This presentation of teaching and learning materials represent the psychomotor aspect of education in which pupils have to use their head, hand and heart. In order for them to do all these effectively, they must have the necessary equipment that supports positive learning outcomes".

He maintained that as LASUBEB continues to pursue its mantra of “leaving no child behind in access to basic education”, the Board is also incorporating practical learning and development of skills as part of its curriculum to maximise the potentials of the pupils and also enable them gain practical and valuable experiences.

According to Alawiye-King, the items provided by the State government are meant to equip the Computer centres, Home Economics, Art and Craft centres, Mini Resource centres and Teachers Resource centres of about 143 schools in all the 20 Local Government Education Authority in the State.

One of the Permanent Board members of LASUBEB, Dr. Saheed Ibikunle described the gesture as a laudable initiative that is in sync with the T.H.E.M.E.S agenda of the State Government, specifically the Education and Technology pillar.

He said that the presentation of the teaching and learning materials is a follow-up to the already introduced technology into teaching and learning in the public primary schools in the State through the EkoExcel initiative.

“The donated items would serve as a way of revamping vocational centres such that school pupils could be equipped with vocational skills from their primary school levels”, Dr. Ibikunle stated.

He expressed the view that if some basic consumables are not available to support teaching and learning, the intended output would not be achieved.

Also speaking at the presentation of the materials, another Permanent member of the Board, Mrs. Sijuade Idowu-Tiamiyu urged the school administrators to put to good use, the donated items.

UBEC MEETS LAGOS EDUCATION STAKEHOLDERS ON NATIONAL PERSONNEL AUDIT

In a bid to ensure smooth and credible information gathering in Public and Private Schools, the management of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), led by Dr. Hamid Bobboyi met with Lagos SUBEB, Hon. Commissioner of Education and private education stakeholders of basic education institutions in Lagos State to sensitize them on the ongoing National Personnel Audit. Recall that the National Personnel Audit is an exercise in accordance with the UBE Act 2004, which empowers the commission (UBEC) to carry out regular personnel audit of teaching and non-teaching staff of all basic education institutions in Nigeria. The exercise is to establish a basic education data bank and also conduct research on basic education in the country. ![lasubeb_ubec2022_8.jpeg](http://157.230.58.69/uploads/lasubeb_ubec2022_8_df28a5f221.jpeg) The meeting held in LASUBEB’s Board room, had in attendance Executive Secretary UBEC, Chairman Governing Board UBEC, management staff of the Commission, SUBEB Chairman, Education Secretaries, Headteachers, representatives of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Association for Formidable Educational Development and Representatives of Muslim Schools. Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King explained that the numeration which commenced on 6th June, 2022, is to comprehensively gather credible data of Nursery, Primary and Junior schools in the State. ![lasubeb_ubec2022_7.jpeg](http://157.230.58.69/uploads/lasubeb_ubec2022_7_40086e70ea.jpeg) He furthered that the auditing process is not an attempt to sanction schools but to track the achievements of relevant sustainable development goals in the basic education sector. Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, Executive Secretary UBEC, who led the census team illuminated that the auditing is implemented by a multi-sectorial committee of the commission to determine the key performance indicators in the basic education sub-sector and also obtain reliable data for assessing the impact of basic education delivery. He added that the census will assist in identifying the gaps in the operating system, and also strategize on the approach to be used in solving the challenges facing the institution, affirming that it is not for tax or billing purposes. He mentioned that Lagos State has been undercounted due to lack of cooperation of private basic education providers, urging them to cooperate and support the enumerators in achieving an effective data gathering for national and global reportage. During the visit of the UBEC team to the State Ministry of Education, Honorable Commissioner, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo stated that the counting will help determine the numbers of schools in the state pledging the Ministry’s support in achieving a successful information gathering exercise. Vice President NAPPS, Mrs. Otegbeye and Cordinator of AFED pledged the associations support and promised to sensitize other bodies on the exercise.

LASUBEB CELEBRATES SCHOOL MANAGERS

To ensure continuous motivation of the workforce towards the enhancement of quality teaching and learning, the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board organized a get-together for school managers across the state on Friday, 13th May, 2022, at Olusosun Primary School, Oregun, Ikeja. At the ceremony, the Executive Chairman, Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King commended the administrators for their diligent contributions to the delivery of basic education services in the state. He noted that the essence of the gathering is to appreciate the educators for their conscientious dedication to pupils in Public Primary Schools and to charge them to remain committed. In his remarks at the gathering, he applauded Mr. Governor for the upward review of running cost to schools, adding that, the fund to be disbursed is to ensure a conducive learning environment for effective teaching and learning activities. He stated that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is committed to the welfare and well-being of teachers in the state, urging them not to rest on their oars but to continue to discharge their duties with a high sense of responsibility. Alawiye-King also appreciated the Commissioner of Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo for her tireless efforts in the realization of the giant strides in basic education. Comrade Hassan Akintoye, NUT Chairman Lagos State, commended the state government on the increase in the running cost, adding that the increase will boost effective service delivery in schools. Chairman AOPSHON (Association of Primary School Headteachers of Nigeria), Comrade Olukayode Edun appreciated the State government for the recognition given to the school managers. He thereafter pledged continuous selfless service to the pupils and the state in general on behalf of his colleagues.
